I was delighted when Yvonne & Guite sent me a box of their amazing canelés. I’ve always wanted to try these French delights, but I’d never seen anywhere selling them. So the opportunity to have some sent to me in the post, was something I just couldn’t turn down!
Incidentally after I received these canelés, a new stall was set-up at the farmers market at the top of my road and they were selling canelés!
Now before I go on to tell you how wonderful these were, I’m sure some of you might be thinking, What on earth is a canelé?
A canelé is a French pastry that resembles a baked custard, it’s soft and doughy on the inside, while the outside is caramelised and dark brown. Canelés have a very distinctive shape due to the little copper pans they are baked in. Yvonne & Guite Canelés are made of milk, eggs, sugar, flour, butter, vanilla and rum, they don’t contain any preservatives or colourings. Although canelés contain rum, they’re suitable for little ones as the high cooking temperatures cause the alcohol to evaporate.
Caroline is the founder of Yvonne & Guite. After her mum offered up the family canelé moulds, she began developing her own recipe as she wasn’t totally satisfied with the ones she found on the internet or in recipe books. Eventually, she created the recipe that was the perfect balance of flavours!
Originally from Vendée in France, Caroline could easily purchase canelés whenever she liked. However after a disappointing search to find some appetising canelés when she moved to London, she decided to take matters into her own hands. As a result Yvonne & Guite was born. Caroline is convinced that her canelés can stand toe to toe with macarons and even cupcakes! I have to admit I agree with her!
These canelés are delicious and the packaging is gorgeous. Yvonne & Guite really have an eye for detail. They are neatly wrapped in greaseproof paper with the Yvonne & Guite logo and a beautiful card is included with details of how to reheat your canelés to enjoy them at their finest.
Once warmed these little cakes taste wonderful, the vanilla and rum permeate the soft texture and they’re perfect with coffee, tea or even brandy. They come in two sizes, the smaller ones can be enjoyed after a meal with something to drink, the larger cakes are perfect for breakfast or to share. Yvonne & Guite are looking to develop other flavours of canelé, but for now they’re concentrating on this original recipe.
I really enjoyed this box of canelés and so did the family and friends I shared them with. They have a lot of flavour for something so small and they are very moreish, they also keep really well and it’s great that you just need to reheat them to serve. These would make a lovely gift to receive in the post, they’re perfect for an after dinner coffee and treat.
